- Air Warrior III Demo ReadMe.txt
- December 10, 1997
-
- This is a playable demo of the box version of Air Warrior III. It
- includes an instant action mission and an historical mission where
- you fly with the U.S. Navy Squadron, VF-17 - The Jolly Rogers. The
- terrain included, however, is not one of the very large scale terrains
- offered in the box version. This was done to keep the file size low.
- However, this should give you a good idea of how the game looks and
- plays, especially if you have a Direct 3D compatible video card.
-
- Support text files included with this release are:
-
- README.TXT - the file you are reading now. This is general
- help and advice regarding a broad array of potential problems.
-
- README3D.TXT - help, specifically, for issues regarding 3D
- hardware video acceleration. This text file also provides
- detailed comparisons of every 3D video card we tested with
- Air Warrior III.
-
- FAQ.TXT - frequently asked questions regarding Air Warrior III
- on a wide range of potential problem areas, along with answers.
-
- JOYSTICK.TXT - this, as its name implies, is a help and
- information file covering joysticks and game controllers.
-
- SERVICE.TXT - read this for information regarding where and
- how you can play Air Warrior in a large scale multiplayer
- online environment. This demo cannot be used for online play
- but there is an online version of the Air Warrior III software
- available where online Air Warrior play is available.
-
- **********************************************************************
- Overview
- **********************************************************************
- Chances are that if you are reading this far you have been experiencing
- problems getting Air Warrior III to run on your computer. Developers
- write these README files in the hope that no customer has cause to
- actually read them. However, when it comes to Direct 3D (the
- operating system that allows us to employ the advanced capabilities of
- today's 3D hardware accelerator), and the wide variety of 3D
- accelerated video cards on the market today, many customers will have
- problems at first.
-
- The following covers many known possible problems - some of them
- large, some minor - and, we hope, some solutions. If you do not have
- a 3D video card, and you're reading this to help you decide on which
- one to purchase, read README3D.TXT - it covers all the 3D cards we
- tested while developing Air Warrior III.
-
- To install Air Warrior III, just run AW3DEMO.EXE.
-
- This demo requires that you have DirectX 5.0 installed on your
- computer. If you do not have DX5 it is available on the
- Microsoft web site at:
-
- http://www.microsoft.com/directx/resources/dx5end.htm
-
- Most problems people encounter running Air Warrior III involve
- compatibility with DirectX 5.0. Most recently manufactured video
- cards are compatible with DirectX, but in some cases you will
- need the latest drivers for your card.
-
- If you have a 3D card, and you see nothing but very dark or very light
- land masses - no textures being drawn - when you run Air Warrior III,
- the first thing you should try is a reinstallation of Direct X 5.0.
- Odd as it sounds, this has worked in many cases, even when Direct X
- 5.0 had been previously installed. If this does not help, your next
- best step, as noted above, is to visit the web site for your video
- card manufacturer and download the latest drivers for your card.
- README3D.TXT has a list of the drivers we used when testing many
- popular 3D cards.
-
- For help nearly anywhere in the Air Warrior III demo, simply press
- F1. For additional information on joystick and flight controller
- setup, see JOYSTICK.txt. A Frequently Asked Questions file, FAQ.txt
- is also included.
-
- NOTE TO SOUNDBLASTER AWE32 AND AWE64 OWNERS:
- In order to get sounds, particularly network speech, to work properly
- in Air Warrior III, you need to disable a sound processing mode on the
- card called WaveSynth. It employs floating point processing for sound
- and can create conflicts with other programs (such as AWIII) that also
- use a lot of floating point.
-
- To disable WaveSynth, go to Settings, Control Panel, and select
- Multimedia. Under the Advanced tab you should see an option called
- "Midi device and Instruments." Select it and highlight, "WaveSynth/WG
- Midi" and click on properties. Then check the box that says "Do not
- use midi features on this device" and it will disable your wavesynth
- without taking it off the system.
-
- JOYSTICK PROBLEMS UNDER DIRECTX 5:
- If you experience joystick spikes, or have trouble calibrating your
- rudder pedals, from the Start menu, select Settings, Control Panel,
- and Game Controllers. Click the Advanced tab, and disable the
- Poll with interrupts enabled option on the bottom left of the
- screen.
-
- COCKPIT ART DISTORTION:
- If the inflight cockpit artwork looks strange to you, in the view
- mode you prefer using, set the program to optimize for that mode.
- From the Setup Hangar, select User Preferences, and Flight Window
- Resolution. There are three inflight view modes: Normal (reduced
- view window, more range reporting information on other aircraft),
- Combat (larger view screen, digital gauges), and Full Screen (full
- view window, limited range reporting information on other aircraft).
- Optimize for the one you use most.
-
- NOTICE TO AIR WARRIOR II USERS
- Do not try to play your Air Warrior II films with this demo. Only
- one terrain is included, and if you try and play a film recorded in
- another terrain it will crash the demo program.
-
- Get to know the game before you worry about all those bewildering
- custom options. Air Warrior III has more opportunities to customize
- settings than any flight sim yet created - in large part because Air
- Warrior has been played for more than 10 years, and this is a tradition
- in the game. However, you'd be best advised to stay away from many of
- these custom settings until you become familiar with the game, as
- they can be overly mind boggling. Adjust things as you discover what
- you like and don't like about the game. For example, if you get
- really sick of certain sound effects, turn them down or off in sound
- setup. Similarly, if you really enjoy the sounds of other aircraft,
- guns, explosions, sheep, and so forth, you can increase the distance
- at which you hear these in the custom portion of sound setup.
-
- NEW OFFLINE COMMANDS ADDED
- To learn how to command the aircraft in your group in offline missions
- consult the the Air Warrior III help file - hit F1 anywhere in the
- program to invoke help. Two new commands have been added, however,
- since the help file was finished:
-
- - STATUS and POSITION.
- Usage:
- '[group id] STATUS
- All pilots in the group will report damage, fuel,
- ammo and bomb load.
- If no group ID is specified, it defaults to the group
- you are leading or flying with.
- '[group id] POSITION
- All pilots in the group will report sector, heading,
- altitude and airspeed.
- If no group ID is specified, it defaults to the group
- you are leading or flying with.

- mechanic's clipboard, and select Flight photo of the control(s) you
- choose will appear in the box above each pull down list. Then click
- the Test and Calibrate button. Go through the calibration routine for
- each flight control, and click close. Click on the mechanic's arm to

- prominent fighter on that opening main screen). This takes puts you
- immediately into an Instant Action mission. The c and v keys
- increase/decrease throttle. If you're using a mouse, holding down
- the left button and moving the mouse fore or aft increases/decreases
- throttle. The 7 key gives you War Emergency engine power (WEP),
- though its of limited duration. The f key fires you guns. So does
- the right mouse button. To center your "stick" when flying with a
